Your 5-Minute Capacity Reset

Find what’s draining your capacity—and reclaim the 5–10% you need right now.

When you’re already living at 95% capacity, it doesn’t take much to push you to 100%.

This isn’t about getting better at calming yourself down every time that happens.

It’s about identifying what’s keeping you at 95% in the first place.

This reset will help you identify what’s using your capacity, find the 5–10% you can reclaim, and choose one move that actually addresses the source.

QUESTION 1

How demanding does life feel right now?

Think about everything currently requiring something from you: work, parenting, decisions, deadlines, relationships, finances, caregiving, uncertainty, responsibilities.

Choose the answer that feels closest.

  • 1–2: Pretty manageable

  • 3–4: Busy, but I have room

  • 5–6: A lot is being asked of me

  • 7–8: I’m carrying a heavy load

  • 9–10: It feels like too much

QUESTION 2

How much do you feel like you have available to meet those demands?

Think about your physical energy, mental clarity, emotional bandwidth, recovery, support.

  • 1–2: I’m running on empty

  • 3–4: I’m getting by, but there isn’t much left

  • 5–6: I have some capacity, but I’m stretched

  • 7–8: I feel fairly resourced

  • 9–10: I have plenty available

QUICK INSIGHT

Capacity isn’t only about how much is on your plate.

It’s the relationship between:

What life is asking of you- and- What you have available to meet it.

QUESTION 3

Which type of load feels MOST significant for you right now?

Choose the one that is taking the most out of you today.

PHYSICAL LOAD

My body is running low.

Fatigue, poor sleep, overstimulation, constant pushing, not enough recovery.

MENTAL LOAD

My brain is holding too much.

Decisions, planning, open loops, remembering everything, task-switching, unfinished things.

EMOTIONAL LOAD

Something inside me is taking energy.

Worry, fear, resentment, grief, uncertainty, disappointment, something I’m trying not to feel.

RELATIONAL LOAD

I’m carrying too much with or for other people.

Keeping the peace, managing emotions, avoiding a conversation, overfunctioning, carrying something alone, not asking for or receiving help.

QUESTION 4

Which of these is quietly using capacity you may not need to keep spending?

Choose the one that makes you think: “If I handled THAT differently, I’d have a little more room.”

  • I’m trying to make a decision before I have enough information

  • I’m mentally tracking something instead of capturing it somewhere reliable

  • I keep rehearsing a conversation in my head

  • I’m carrying responsibility for someone else’s feelings or reaction

  • I’m holding myself to an expectation or standard that could change

  • I’ve agreed to something that needs to be renegotiated

  • I’m carrying an unfinished task that would take less energy to complete than to keep thinking about

  • I’m avoiding something I need to feel or acknowledge

  • I’m avoiding something I need to say

  • I’m carrying something someone else could reasonably help with

  • I’m giving attention to something that doesn’t actually need it right now

  • I already know there’s something I need to say no to

QUICK INSIGHT

You do not need to eliminate every demand in your life.

Some things are real.

Some seasons are hard.

Some responsibilities matter.

We’re looking for the part of your load that doesn’t need to be carried the way you’re currently carrying it.

That’s where we can reclaim capacity.

QUESTION 5

What does this drain actually need from you?

Different drains require different responses.

Choose the move that feels most useful.

CLOSE IT

Finish the open loop. Make the decision. Send the email. Schedule it. Complete the thing that keeps taking up mental space.

DROP IT

Stop carrying what doesn’t need to be carried. Release the expectation. Stop taking responsibility for what isn’t yours.

DEFER IT

It matters—but not right now. Give it a specific time or place so your brain can stop trying to hold it today.

CHANGE IT

Change the expectation, boundary, commitment, timeline, standard, environment, or decision.

SHARE IT

Ask. Delegate. Tell someone. Let someone help. Let yourself be known. Let someone carry a piece of it with you.

NOW GET SPECIFIC

With the option you chose above, get specific on what you can do in the next 24 hours that could give you 5-10% of your capacity back. Then actually DO IT!

YOUR RESET

Sometimes a regulating practice is exactly what you need in the moment.

But remember, a regulation tool can’t resolve a boundary problem.

A productivity tool can’t process an emotional load.

A mindset shift can’t replace a conversation you need to have.

The goal is to get better at recognizing what drains you in the first place, so the regulating tools aren't needed as much.

So celebrate yourself!

You just identified:

What’s using your capacity.

Where some of that capacity may be getting spent unnecessarily.

What kind of response the drain actually needs.

And one move you can make next.

ONE LAST THING

Keep ending up back at 95%?

A five-minute reset can help you create some room today.

But if you’re constantly recovering from overwhelm only to find yourself right back at capacity…

If little things keep pushing you over the edge…

Or if you’re functioning well on the outside but it’s taking far more out of you than people realize…

there may be a larger pattern underneath it.

That’s the deeper work I do through Capacity Code.

I’ve opened a few complimentary 20-minute Capacity Conversations for women from Beneath the Surface.

We’ll look at what may be keeping you at 95% and where you could start creating more room.

What would change if 95% stopped being your normal?
